BRITAIN is to phase out the manufacture and use of CFCs by the end of 1995, two years ahead of the existing European Community deadline, Michael Heseltine, the Environment Secretary, announced yesterday.
The move follows a decision by President Bush on Tuesday to commit the United States to phasing out CFCs by the same date, four years ahead of the previous deadline.
Mr Heseltine╒s announcement also came in the wake of a warning this month from scientists measuring the scale of ozone depletion over Europe and North America.
They urged people spending any length of time out in the sunshine this month and next to wear dark glasses and sun cream to protect against eye cataracts and skin cancer.
